OK, so as you know I moved recently. Well I have never really lived in my own house before except for when I was a child. I have always been an apartment/friend’s couch dweller. So I have been learning quite a few new things. One of them being how trash services work.
I called and established service, but upon moving in noticed that the maintenance/cleaning crew left a ton of trash. And the trash day was the day before I moved in. So there I was with a ton of trash sitting there for 6 days, on top of the trash leftover from the move and just daily life.
So I was worried that the would only pick-up a certain amount of trash, plus I only had ONE trash can for an entire big house! It turns out that they will pickup up to 10 bags/cans of trash each week and that I can provide my own can or rent one from them for $1.50 a month. Well I was happy to find that out because I always thought that there were tighter limits on how much trash they would pick-up each week.
OK, so I moved residences last month and had to select a new carrier for Internet and Cable. Now I had Cox Communications as my provider for about 8 years before moving to the last place, in which I was forced into using Time Warner for Cable. I loved Cox when I had them before and I HATED Time Warner at my old place. They really sucked, had a poor channel selection, and terrible customer service. But they were the only game in town.
My new residence was open to AT&T/DirectTV or Cox. I had never really experienced DirectTV so I thought that I would poll my office of about 30 people to see what they would recommend. That was a mistake and got me no where. The answers were very oddly split almost down the middle.
At the end of the day I decided to go with Cox because of my history with them and also because I was afraid of the “dish” and its unfamiliarity. Cox was actually much more expensive but I figured it was worth it.
Well I was right. They did mess up and forgot to ship our DVR boxes to the house even though I scheduled with them 3 weeks in advance. But they were very apologetic and the guy that came to hookup their digital phone (I got the bundle) called it in for me and had them shipped out immediately. He also gave me a modem off of his truck so that I could get Internet going. The boxes arrived a few days later and they prorated my bill to not charge me for the cable and the box rentals for the days I did not have them.
The service is great so far. Internet is fast even thought I did not go with the very highest speed and the channel selection is great! I definitely recommend Cox Communications.
The Palm Pre Phone from Sprint was recently announced to world at the annual CES Show, and with a big bang! The phone won both the People’s Voice Award and the Best of CES 2009. That leaves many with high expectations of the revolutionary new phone from Palm.
The biggest announcement may not be the phone itself but the new WebOS that Palm is unveiling. Its touted as better than the iPhone and with the large developer base that Palm already has they plan on having many custom apps available for it, and the Pre, soon.
But the worry is that most developers have switched to developing iPhone apps, and because of the phone’s popularity developers can make more money developing apps for the iPhone. But Palm hopes to change that with the Pre, which is supposed to offer a faster browsing experience where you can have multiple apps, or cards as they call them, running at the same time. You can flip back and forth between cards with a flick of the screen.
There is basically a lot of functionality that the iPhone does not have like the ability to run multiple apps at the same time and the ability to copy and paste. Check out Palm Pre Reviews
I found this great add on for Firefox that integrated Tinyurl.com functionality. This add on lets you select a url and then turn it into a tinyurl via the Tools> TinyUrl menu in your Firefox browser. This is really convenient, especially if you are a Twitter junkie like myself.
Once installed you can use the tool to shorten URLs by selecting from the Tools menu in firefox. But an even easier way is to right click on any page that you are on and select “Create tiny URL for this link.” This then opens up a box that gives you the shortened URL for the page that you are on and automatically places the tinyURL in your clipboard so you can quickly paste to Twitter or anywhere else.
Another cool feature is that you can right click on any link and select “Create tinyURL for this link,” which is very convenient since you do not have to open a new window.
I highly recommend this Firefox plugin and have been using it for years now. Although there are other URL shortening services that are more popular now, I like TinyURL because of the convenience of this plugin.
